Charles "Charlie" Thomson was the second with Alex Raisbeck of the two great centre-halves of the years from the start of the 20th Century and The Great War. And he was not only a great player both in and for Scotland and in England on Wearside but also typical in starting out as a forward, in his case a centre-forward, before dropping back somewhat to play the Scottish iteration of the position.
He was born in 1878 in Prestonpans, his parents both from the town, his father a fisherman. And he began work as a Message Boy eventually becoming a Baker, whilst playing his football as a forward with the town club.
And it was as a forward that at perhaps just twenty in 1898 he joined Hearts and was soon in the first team, winning the Scottish Cup in 1901 at inside-forward but gradually converting. By the time of his first cap in 1904 he had already dropped back to centre-half
